Horizon Prizes (Research and Innovation)

CO2-reuse, low carbon and photovoltaic Prizes

Horizon Prizes are challenge prizes (also known as 'inducement' prizes) which offer a cash reward to whoever can most effectively meet a defined challenge. They act as an incentive for innovation. They prescribe the goal but not who the innovator should be or how the goal should be achieved. The European Commission is introducing a set of challenge prizes under Horizon 2020, the EU's research and innovation programme.

Horizon Prizes

Current Prizes

CO2 reuse prize – €1.5 million

Horizon prize CO2 reuse will reward innovative products utilising CO2 that could significantly reduce the atmospheric emissions of CO2 when deployed on a commercial scale. The prize will induce actors in this field to do more to improve their processes and products in order to reduce atmospheric emissions of CO2. Moreover, the prize aims to mobilise and enhance private R&I investment, attract non-traditional players, create new partnerships and incentivise researchers and innovators to enhance efforts to abate emissions of anthropogenic CO2 in the atmosphere.

Application: until 3 April 2019

Low carbon hospital – €1 million

Horizon prize for Combined Heat and Power (CHP) installation in a hospital using 100% renewable energy sources will reward a hospital that has an innovative and perfectly integrated combined CHP installation within its premises. This installation has to use at least three different European renewable energy technologies, include energy storage component(s) and be able to provide 100% of the hospital's annual needs for energy consumption. In this context any renewable energy source is allowed.

Application: until 3 April 2019

Photovoltaics meets history – €750'000

Horizon prize for Integrated Photovoltaic Energy System will reward a European protected historic urban district that has perfectly integrated in its buildings a photovoltaic system to generate and supply electricity for at least 50% of its required electricity consumption. In this context the photovoltaic system should include all the necessary components to supply power within the district.

Application: until 26 September 2018
